“We need more fans like these guys in Columbus.”

We don’t know if they’ll be out, but look for Johan Jellenberg and his brother, Christan Rosen, as the Blue Jackets take on the St. Louis Blues tonight

Discount tickets and free hot dogs might have been the lure to fill seats for the Columbus Blue Jackets’ home opener last night.
But a ferocious opening-seconds fight on the ice and tenacious play were reasons to stay, said die-hard fans who had suffered through a months-long labor lockout and the trading of the team’s star, Rick Nash.

“We will do our best to make Columbus a better hockey club,” said John Davidson, who was introduced yesterday as the Blue Jackets’ new president of hockey operations. “We’ll make it a better city because we’ll do our part as part of the hockey family, knowing what the team can mean to the city. It’s important to grow on the ice; and we’ve got to be really good at growing off the ice, too.
“We make a promise that we’ll make it a better place. Our family will do what we can to make the team better on the ice and off the ice.”

I really feel like hockey was on the verge of something big, the way it’s grown so much in the last few years. But not after this. This is going to do damage to the game. The people, the fans, are angry. None of us players wanted to reach this point, but we kind of expected it with the last few weeks going by with no progress.
