Lainie Rini wants her fellow Ohio State University students to hear the stories of Dale Johnston and Melinda Dawson, two Ohioans whose lives were turned upside down by wrongful murder convictions.

The second-year student from Dayton says both have been invited to the inaugural meeting of a Columbus chapter of Ohioans to Stop Executions, a group that seeks to abolish the death penalty in the state.

“I think it’s especially important to Ohio State, especially now when a lot of young minds are coming together to really think about the system we inherit,” Rini said. “This is a broken system. This is old-fashioned. This doesn’t have to represent our generation.”
