Instead of arresting a drunk driver, cops can drop him off at Taco Bell
Both the Delaware County sheriff’s office and the State Highway Patrol leave decisions about whether to arrest an intoxicated person up to individual officers.
It’s also up to them to decide whether that person will be safe if he doesn’t end up in jail. On July 28, officers may have made the wrong decision when they picked up an apparently intoxicated Uriel Juarez Popoca — who had been driving erratically — and dropped him off at Taco Bell, telling him to find a ride home.
Popoca didn’t end up in jail, but he did end up dead after being struck by an SUV while walking home.
