Our Columbus historian writes of two local newspapermen’s violent shootout:
On Feb. 8, 1891, William Elliott had called Osborn a thief in the Sunday Capital. On Feb. 22, Osborn’s Sunday World had accused Elliott of “drunkenness, lewdness, domestic brutality” and said the women of his family were unchaste.
Osborn was standing near the Neil House, across High Street from the Statehouse, when he spotted the brothers. William Elliott made his way through the crowd, pointed his gun at Osborn and squeezed off one or two shots before Osborn returned fire.
William Elliott’s bullet hit Osborn in the chin, shattered his jaw and lodged in his neck…
